Brendan Kennedy, president of Privateer Holdings of Seattle, welcomed the Canadian announcement. His company owns Tilray, a medicinal marijuana facility in British Columbia, and he is looking to build a facility that would supply the market for recreational marijuana in Canada.

Medical cannabis is a US$10b market that will grow to $100b over next 3 to 5 years, that's according to Brendan Kennedy, global president of Tilray, one of the largest producers of the product. Tilray is owned by US private equity firm Privateer Holdings. Last week the Australian senate passed legislation to allow the growing of medical cannabis.

"We don't have a roadblock in regards to banking; we don't have a roadblock in terms of conflict between state and federal law," said Brendan Kennedy, president of Tilray, which runs a 60,000-square-foot, indoor marijuana facility in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Private Equity Beat was on hand as Tilray held a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 28 to commence shipping its products. The company hopes to have the space, which is now 70% finished, completed by Sept. 1 with the expectation that it will serve about 8,000 patients.

Tilray has since bought a building for $3.5 million and spent $17 million to renovate it. The company employs 65 people, with plans to increase that number to 100. “One hundred new jobs in a community of less than 100,000, that’s a big deal,” Mr. Kennedy said.

“We’ve invested to produce cannabis on a scale unlike anything that’s currently available in Canada,” Kennedy said, adding that while other facilities he’s seen are dirty and inefficient, this one is the exact opposite. “We wanted everything to be clean.”
